SAYING "Adios" to friends and family in Brisbane's Western Deanery, WYD11 pilgrims gathered for a retreat and Mass before their departure.

Dean Fr Gerry Kalinowski was on hand to give them a "pilgrim Cross" made from olive wood in the Holy Land to take with them on the WYD11 journey to Spain.

Deanery projects officer Michael Doherty said the retreat was "a gentle and insightful afternoon of scripture, reflection and prayer".

"Each of the pilgrims stated how glad they had been to take time out of their busy pre-pilgrimage schedule to be still, listen to God's Word and prepare for WYD."

A pilgrim walk from the retreat in Oxley to St Joseph's Church, Corinda, followed for the deanery's evening youth Mass.

Pilgrims were involved in the Mass and a young adult choir and youth orchestral ensemble led the singing.

"The Tongan Choir added an international flavour to the Mass" Michael said, especially in "their traditional Tongan dress".

A total of 25 young people from the deanery are in Madrid for WYD11 among an estimated 3000 Australians.

The week of faith-filled celebrations will culminate today (August 21) with a Mass at which Pope Benedict XVI will preside.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Youth Outreach is hosting "Fuel on the Hill" today for those who were unable to travel to Madrid.

It is being held at Stuartholme School, Toowong, beginning at midday.
