Choirs to experience Anzac Cove dawn

Published: 27 November 2011

CHOIRS from St Joseph's College and All Hallows' School in Brisbane will combine to lead the singing at Anzac Day commemorations in Gallipoli, Turkey, from 2012.

Federal Veterans' Affairs Minister Warren Snowdon announced their selection recently.

At a presentation at St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace, Mr Snowdon said being a part of Anzac Day commemorations was an invaluable experience for all Australians and this was an excellent opportunity for the younger generation to be involved.

"Music is a key element in the commemorative program and St Joseph's and All Hallows' have proven their superior talent in this area," he said.

"This combined school choral group will be involved in the commemorations from next year through to the centenary commemorations in 2015.

"Performing during the centenary commemorative period will be an unforgettable experience for these young Australians."

Mr Snowdon said the choral group would include young men and women aged from nine to 18.

St Joseph's College principal Peter Chapman said of being selected: "Terrace has long had an enduring respect for and link to Gallipoli, beginning with our Old Boys who were at Anzac Cove in 1915.

"For our young men to be able to pay tribute to the sacrifice made by the soldiers at Gallipoli will provide them with a memory that will remain with them all their lives."

All Hallows' principal Dr Lee-Anne Perry said: "We are delighted and honoured that our schools have been invited to provide the choral accompaniment for the Dawn Service at Gallipoli over the coming years.

"The opportunity to contribute to this most significant ritual at Gallipoli on Anzac Day is a privilege and the experience will be treasured by all those involved."

Established in 2008, St Joseph's Chapel Choir has performed at regular liturgical events, community events and on the international stage.

The choir recently returned from a performance tour of Italy which included singing during Mass at St Peter's Basilica, Vatican City.

All Hallows' Sr Mary Celine Chorale performs regularly at school and community events and is often invited by other organisations to provide choral entertainment.

In 2009, the group travelled to Hong Kong to participate in a collaborative music project with the Chinese International School, Hong Kong.

The choral group was selected following a competitive expression of interest process conducted by the Veterans' Affairs Department.
