THE highlight of the school library year was held last month with thousands of Queensland Catholic school students exchanging their school uniforms for colourful costumes to celebrate Book Week.
With the 2011 theme of "One World, Many Stories", many children took inspiration not just from book characters but also from the different cultures of the world for costume ideas.
At St Patrick's Primary School, Gympie, students also explored the different characters from the books that were shortlisted by the Children's Book Council of Australia.
Teacher librarian Jill Kelly said Book Week was a date students looked forward to every year.
"They undeniably enjoy the dressing up but also relish exploring the previously unfamiliar stories that are promoted every year," she said.
"As an event to encourage reading, it is very effective."
Ms Kelly said that, at St Patrick's, the 2011 celebration was an extra success due to the new hall and library facilities.
"These created a fresh atmosphere and certainly helped things to run more smoothly," she said.
