FANTASTIC bargains were on offer at the inaugural Market Garden Day at St Joseph's School, Bardon.

Seedlings and potted plants grown in the school's nursery garden, student-made crafts and various other items were up for grabs as more than $1500 was raised to be ploughed back into the school's own garden.

Preppies and Year 3 students also organised food to sell at the school tuckshop to add to the money raised from the market garden.

St Joseph's head of sustainability Wendy Lamb said the day was a huge success and because of this many more would be held.

Bargain hunter Robert Fowler said it was a "tremendous" idea as it was not only a great opportunity for parents and grandparents to support the school, it also showed the students how to use money, "which is going to be with them for the rest of their lives".

"It's very interactive and everybody's involved in some way in the life of the school," he said.

School officer Danni Harden, who helps run the school's garden, said the money raised would be ploughed back into the garden.

"We started the garden two years ago and so far have put a lot of our own time and money into it," she said.

"We decided we needed more money and more help to put back into the garden so we came up with this idea for this great community event.

"It's about sustainability and recycling and working together to build a better community within the school."
