Time to break promises

Following the Federal election campaign we've just experienced, I'm hoping there's at least one promise our political leaders will consider breaking.

It's to do with their "tough talking" on asylum seekers who try to reach Australia by boat.

St Vincent de Paul Society national president Syd Tutton is right to call for an end "to the senseless demonisation of asylum seekers" and to remind us that these people have every right to seek asylum here (Page 3).

The "tough" decision for our politicians would be to show leadership based on compassion.
