More to be done about mental health

Published: 9 October 2011
By: Russell Darby

MENTAL Health Week begins today (October 9) and is a timely reminder of the struggle by so many in our community, for example, those suffering bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia or major depression, which all resonate the underlying disease.

Health funding has been increased. However, hospitals still struggle with presentations to the emergency department and the community services then poses a big challenge.

Pathways of care should be created in the management of the person without needing hospital admission.

There is still so much more to be done in the management of this disease to ensure that those living with mental health do not have their dignity compromised.

Family and friends need to be supported and, above all, applauded for their commitment in this quest.

The Church, as a community, has a responsibility, through pastoral care, to also lend support to this quest.
