Listening to right message

DEBATE about Australia's policies in relation to asylum seekers brings out the best and worst in our politics, and the best and worst in the community.

The worst of politics emerges when some quarters seek to demonise asylum seekers in a way that promotes prejudice at the expense of human rights - all for scoring cheap political points.

The best shines when others are brave enough and willing to show honourable leadership in speaking out against such attitudes in order to promote human rights and compassion.

If the Australian community is swayed by the former our idea of a fair go fades and we can be overtaken by fear and a mean spirit.

When it stays true to the latter then we find whole communities opening their arms generously to welcome the stranger. Let's hope we continue to listen to our Christian leaders calling for compassion.
