Compassion above politics

Published: 21 March 2010

WHILE some still seek to drag asylum seekers into the centre of a political game, the Church is right where it should be - standing on the side of the outcast.

In politics, and in parts of the electorate, there is pressure for the Federal Government to take a "tough" stand on asylum seekers, and to turn back any found trying to reach Australia by boat.

The challenge for the Church is to show asylum seekers as much compassion and support as possible. That may become more difficult as the political game manipulates public opinion.

We need to continue to listen to people like Sister of Mercy Maureen Lohrey who deal first-hand with the asylum seekers and who can remind us of the extreme trauma they have endured. Let that help us form our opinions.
