Chance for compassion

Published: 30 May 2010

CHURCH leaders have been critical of our politicians over the lack of compassion being shown to asylum seekers.
Now the Church is being offered the chance to lead by example.

The Federal Government, in seeking groups willing to accommodate asylum seekers, has started in the right place by approaching the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of St Joseph (page 1).

They are religious known for their compassion for the poor and for seeking justice for the downtrodden.

They can be relied upon to dedicate whatever means and resources they have to the service of those in need.

If the Church can help accommodate the latest wave of asylum seekers, it will offer the perfect alternative model to the hard-hearted approach being offered by our political leaders.
